NASA POSTPONES LAUNCH OF SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOUR

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA postponed space shuttle Endeavour's launch to the International Space Station on Saturday because of a leak associated with the gaseous hydrogen venting system outside the shuttle’s external fuel tank. The system is used to carry excess hydrogen safely away from the launch pad. Managers scrubbed the launch for at least 96 hours.
The earliest the shuttle could be ready to launch is June 17. However, there is a conflict on the Eastern Range that date with the scheduled launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite.
Mission managers will hold a meeting at 2 p.m. EDT Sunday to discuss the repair options and Endeavour's launch opportunities. A news conference will follow the meeting and air on NASA Television and the agency’s Web site.
The 16-day mission will feature five spacewalks and complete construction of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory. Astronauts will attach a platform to the outside of the Japanese module that will allow experiments to be exposed to space.
The STS-127 crew members are Commander Mark Polansky, Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialists Dave Wolf, Christopher Cassidy, Tom Marshburn, Tim Kopra and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette. Kopra will join the space station crew and replace Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata. Wakata will return to Earth on Endeavour to conclude a three-month stay at the station.

Fotos do "Field Day" de 2007 e do parque onde vai decorrer o "Field day" de 2009

Amanhã e domingo vai decorrer um evento,sempre aguardado com entusiasmo,pelos radiomadores : o "Field Day".organizado pela ARVM,Associação de Radioamadores da Vila de Moscavide.Embora não seja membro da mencionada associação,não podia deixar de divulgar o evento,e incentivar todas as pessoas que se interessem,a acorrer ao local,onde,seguramente,serão bem recebidas.Quem sabe,não poderão surgir novos radioamadores,entre os visitantes?

" Mantendo a tradição iniciada em 1991 , na Golegã, a ARVM vai levar a efeito o Field-Day 2009, nos dias 13 e 14 de Junho.
A Direcção assume a organização do Field Day 2009, que terá como temas principais as comunicações via rádio e o convívio entre radioamadores, estaremos operativos em todas as bandas.
Foi escolhido o PARQUE DE MONTEMOR, situado no Concelho de Loures, junto à rotunda de acesso à CREL, a 100 metros à direita na estrada para Caneças.

O parque está no antigo aterro sanitário de Montemor, imediatamente por cima da portagem da CREL. (Saída para Odivelas e Santo António dos Cavaleiros).

Nos dias 13 e 14 de Junho, será montada uma estação de CT1RVM , para operar em todas as bandas, apoiada em energia alternativa ( baterias e geradores ) e pontualmente da rede pública.
Não serão utilizados quaisquer equipamentos de CT1RVM (Sede), excepção ao equipamento do kit da Protecção Civil, cabos, antenas e mastros em armazém.
Todos os Sócios, Associações e Radioamadores em geral, deverão montar, se assim o desejarem, a sua própria estação no local, ou utilizar os seus portáteis ou móveis, em alegres QSOs , a partir do Field-Day 2009 da ARVM.

The mission patch for STS-127 reflects the crew's goal of placing a new piece on the International Space Station's Japanese laboratory Kibo. From medallions and patches to a NASCAR team hat, the varied paths of the seven astronauts of STS-127 are reflected in the commemorative items they are bringing along.
Each crew member is allowed to pack a few things into the shuttle for the trip, although there are some limits, including size and weight.
Three of the astronauts have flown before, but that didn’t diminish their desire to celebrate their latest flight into orbit.
Commander Mark Polansky flew on STS-98 and STS-116. This time up, his commemorative choices include a banner from East Central High School in San Antonio, his wife’s hometown.
Dave Wolf first flew in 1993 and also has served on the Russian space station Mir for 128 days. His hometown of Indianapolis is represented by numerous articles, including an airplane paperweight.
A piece of sheet music is making the trip into space to commemorate Julie Payette’s work with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. The Canadian astronaut is an accomplished singer and pianist.
Christopher Cassidy, making his first flight into space, reflects his previous career with a host of commemoratives from the U.S. Navy’s elite SEAL teams. He’s carrying a medallion from the National Navy Underwater Demolition Team – SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Fla., plus medallions and patches representing SEAL units across the nation.
Fellow first-time flier Doug Hurley is taking a hat from the NASCAR team Joe Gibbs Racing, along with a T-shirt from his alma mater Owego Free Academy in Owego, N.Y.
Tom Marshburn is bringing a pin from Statesville, N.C., his hometown, along with a pewter coaster from the University of Virginia’s engineering department. That’s the school he graduated from.
Tim Kopra piloted helicopters in the U.S. Army before joining NASA. He is taking with him a copper medallion from his high school, McCallum High School in Austin Texas.
Endeavour also is packed with hundreds of items commemorating something not intended to make the trip back – the Exposed Facility of Japan’s Kibo laboratory for the International Space Station.
The exposed facility is a platform that attaches to one end of the Kibo section on the space station. The platform will hold experiments designed to study the vacuum of space outside the station’s protective confines.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, will celebrate the achievement of the lab and the mission in part with the patches, pins and flags flying on Endeavour.

Uma passagem pela bela foz do Douro,permitiu este curto vídeo.É sempre maravilhoso,tentador,quase inebriante,apreciar o mar e o movimento,aparentemente eterno,das ondas.Ao olhar o mar não posso deixar de recordar o texto de Tolkien,em "O Silmarillion":"E Tuor chegou a Nevrast e,olhando para Belegaer,o grande mar,enamorou-se dele,e o seu barulho e o anelo por ele estavam sempre no seu coração e nos seus ouvidos..."

Toca do coruja

Escrevi,numa mensagem anterior,que "Toca do coruja" se relacionava com um artigo de 1967 ou 68,mas errei na data.Ao procurar os antigos exemplares do "Boletim da REP " que ainda se encontram nos meus arquivos,encontrei o artigo mencionado,reproduzido acima:data de 1966!Aliás,para além da simples recordação,ao relêr publicações antigas,encontram-se muitos artigos de grande saber técnico,e ideias e conceitos perfeitamente aplicáveis actualmente.Nem sempre o "dernier cri" (!) tém,obrigatóriamente,que ser,conceptualmente,melhor.É por isso,por exemplo,que muitos ainda consideram os amplificadores de áudio,a válvulas,como os mais perfeitos,em termos de reprodução sonora.Mas,voltando à "toca",esta foi a memória que aflorou à superfície,ao descrever o meu "cantinho" de radioescuta.Pergunto-me se ainda existirão muitos desses grandes radioamadores/radioescutas da época "dourada" da rádio:Carlos
Faria(CR6CH salvo erro),José Correia Victorino,José Roquette,o Dr.Rocha Souto,V.Félix(autor da página acima reproduzida)Mário Portugal,Nelson Soromenho...Homens que,num País atrasado,avesso à inovação e à novidade,temeroso e cioso dos seus privilégios,que dificultava,sobremaneira,a actividade destes amadores,conseguiam demonstrar a sua capacidade técnica,a sua engenhosidade e a sua determinação em ultrapassar as dificuldades!

Crystal Formation

This artist's concept illustrates how silicate crystals like those found in comets can be created by an outburst from a growing star. The image shows a young sun-like star encircled by its planet-forming disk of gas and dust. The silicate that makes up most of the dust would have begun as non-crystallized, amorphous particles.
As streams of material spiral from the disk onto the star, its mass increases and it brightens and heats up dramatically. The resulting outburst causes temperatures to rise in the star's surrounding disk.
When the disk warms from the star's outburst, the amorphous particles of silicate melt. As they cool off, they transform into forsterite (see inset), a type of silicate crystal often found in comets in our solar system.
In April 2008, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope detected evidence of this process taking place on the disk of a young sun-like star called EX Lupi.

Muitos anos antes do 11 de Setembro,em New York,um outro 11 de Setembro,em 1973,assistiu a uma acção terrorista,dessa vez acobertada pelo eufemismo de "golpe de estado",acção essa liderada por Augusto Pinochet.Não pretendo,agora,rememorar a tristeza dos anos seguintes,no Chile,a miséria,o medo,o terror,e a morte,instituídos em suporte de um regime ditatorial,sob o apanágio do "anti-comunismo" mais primário.Quem se interessar sobre a história do Chile,nos primeiros anos da década de 1970,terá que procurar bastante,mas,aconselho que inicie a sua busca pelo filme "Chove em Santiago",onde,se a memória não me falha,poderá encontrar uma(ainda que pálida)ideia,do que foi o "golpe" de 11 de Setembro.

Mas,o objectivo desta mensagem é relembrar que,ao longo dos tenebrosos anos da ditadura de Pinochet,uma estação de rádio(Radio Moscovo,da então URSS),emitiu um programa,diário,para os Chilenos,fosse para os que viviam na sua terra,fosse para os expatriados,que,em grande parte,se estabeleceram na Europa,intitulado "Escucha Chile!".Uma das vozes marcantes desses programas era a de Katya Olyevskaya,falecida hà pouco tempo.
Nos"Sites amigos" apresento o link para o blog "Escucha Chile".Nele se poderá apreciar como,felizmente,a memória(senão de todos,pelo menos de alguns)não esquece as vozes que,ao fim do dia,ou durante a noite,escutadas a medo,transmitiam informações sobre os familiares,os desaparecidos,o que a censura não permitia que os Chilenos soubessem.Que,literalmente,transmitia esperança.
